Ingredients:
• 3-4 boneless chicken breasts, chopped into small chunks
• 1/3 cup flour
• olive oil
• 1/2 T salt
• 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
• 3 T ketchup
• 6 oz. frozen orange juice concentrate (thaw or throw it in the microwave for 45 seconds)
• 4 T brown sugar
In a bowl, mix the orange juice, brown sugar, vinegar, salt, and ketchup.
Pour the flour in a small bowl.
Cover the chicken breast chunks in flour and shake off the excess.

Pour a small amount of olive oil in a skillet and brown the flour-covered chicken.
After the chicken is done cooking, pour the pieces into the crock pot.
Then cover the chicken with your sauce mixture and give the pot a stir.

ReplyDeleteI always like to see if anyone has actually tried a recipe before I do, but I thought I would give this one a try. Just my two cents--it didn't taste like any orange chicken I have ever had, it was pretty citrus-y, and just not to my liking, but maybe others will like it.
ReplyDeleteLola - it didnt taste like orange chix to me either. I added 1/8 cup honey and a few splashes of soy sauce and some garlic. Definitely more like orange chicken!
DeleteLola - I've made this a bunch of times before, and always make it with orange juice instead of concentrate (same measurements). Comes out way better, I feel! Just leave the lid off for a bit to let it thicken up :)

ReplyDeleteI tried this and the sauce was YUMMY. It's more PF Chang's orange peel chicken flavor than Panda Express's orange chicken. However, the chicken was incredibly dry and I even stopped cooking it on low around the 4 hour mark. Any tips on making it better?
ReplyDeleteUpdated notes: I'm wondering if maybe a little extra olive oil or ketchup would help add a little more moisture to the chicken to make it less dry. It also depends on how much chicken you use...I think we used 3-4 chicken breasts when we made it. Thanks for the feedback everyone!
ReplyDeleteI used chicken thighs, so that helped to keep from keeping the meet from drying out. However, i found the sauce to be overly sweet and not very "orange chicken" tasting. Ginger, soy sauce and some other asian spices might help. Unfortunantly, I won't be making this recipe again. BUT! It has inspired me to find/make my own orange chicken recipe in the crock pot.

DeleteI found this recipe on Pinterest and made it today. It actually came out very tasty. The only change I made was that I cooked it for 2hrs 15mints on high and perhaps next time I make it I would just cook it for 2hrs. It wasn't dry and the flavor was just perfect not too sweet not too watery. Used 1 1/2 lbs of boneless chicken breasts and cut it into medium size pieces. Hope this helps to those who have not yet made it :)

ReplyDeleteOk so I loved this recipe because of how simple it is. However, knowing how spicy I like my food this is what I added to it:
ReplyDelete12oz of orange concentrate instead of 6oz
2 tbsp ketchup and 2 tbsp sircacha
1 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp ginger powder
Red chili flakes and Hot shot to taste
An hour before it was done I added green peas, green beans, carrots, and let that cook.
Then in a wok/frying pan I stir-fried chopped up green chilies, one onion, 1 coarsely chopped bell pepper, chopped fresh garlic (one clove), fresh grated ginger (1/2 tsp). Added this to the crockpot and let it cook for another 15 minutes.
Hands down the best orange/ginger chicken ever! The fancy man agreed with me too. I think the original recipe is an awesome base. It definitely gave me incentive to try this recipe.
I made this today and enjoyed it. In order to prevent the "orange juice soup" or watery complaint I've seen, I only used half a can of the orange juice concentrate. It turned out just as pictured and was not dry in the slightest. :)

ReplyDeletemy opinion..not bad. I added more brown sugar, and I took "bleeding daisey" advice and added garlic powder and ginger. Then I added minced garlic, onions and green peppers. Was hesitant, but with all this added ingredients, may cook again. (still lots of prep time)

Just b/c it is good and works for one, doesn't mean it will for someone else. However, I do appreciate those who leave HELPFUL comments. Recipes can always be improved, and I for one, need all the help I can get ;) Just my two cents worth. Also I only had actual OJ in the house so I used about 2 cups.
Then cooked on high for 1 hour and took the top off until the sauce was thick. No dry chicken here, just a crowd pleaser!
I made this a couple days ago and our family really did not like it. It was WAY too orange-y and too sweet. If for some reason I tried to make it again, I would cut the OJ concentrate way back and use less sugar. I think it could also benefit from less ketchup and maybe some soy sauce.

ReplyDeleteNegatives: the orange concentrate made the sauce too acidic and the veggies we added got way too overcooked.
And watch out if you're using Sriracha! I'd never cooked with it before. I used 1 Tbsp instead 2 Tbsp as suggested and it was still pretty darn hot. Overall, I don't think I'd use this exact recipe again, but it was fun to try.
This may be a stupid question - but can you just use orange juice instead of the orange juice concentrate?
ReplyDeleteI made this. I doubled the recipe and added a can of cherry pie filling (lite). Yep, cherry pie filling. The taste was still very orange and citrus and the pie filling helped with the consistency I think quite a bit. Next time I'd try lemon pie filling but I didn't have any on hand. It actually tasted good. No complaints from the family. All the kids ate it and would eat it again if I made it. It's very simple. A basically good recipe and easy to change up a bit to fit your own tastes.

ReplyDeleteI just put mine in the crock pot. I tweeked the sauce by using Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce instead of the ketchup, and added 1/2 tsp each of garlic powder and ground ginger. I kept tasting the sauce until it tasted "right". I didn't see the above post by KateHollstrom11 until after I made mine but next time I think I will add the minced garlic and sesame oil. I sure hope mine turns out!
ReplyDeleteWell, I tossed mine out. I guess I'm not much of an orange chicken person but I do think most people who like Orange Chicken would like this. Make sure you don't over cook it. I had it on high for 4 hours because I was cleaning out my front hall closet and got side-tracked. I think 2-3 hrs is fine.
ReplyDeleteI made this tonight and it was delicious! I only used 4.5 oz of the OJ, I also added 1 tsp of soy sauce, pepper, cooked it on low for 3 hours and high for 45 minutes. It wasn't runny at all, and had a ton of flavor. My husband is a HUGE panda express fan and even though it wasn't fried and crunchy like theirs he LOVED it!

ReplyDeleteI'm making this right now and I found the sauce a little too sweet. To balance it I added a teaspoon of freshly cracked pepper and a teaspoon of garlic powder. It now tastes delicious. Also, instead of the crockpot I am doing it in the skillet, cooking it for an hour on low-medium.

A lttle trick I learn from my chinese friend. Use corn starch instead of flour, it gives that cripsy outside and helps the liquids thicken up. Can't wait to try!

Ok, so I was so excited to try this... I just mixed everything in the crock pot-flour and all! Oops! It still turned out awesome, I had to add a little water cuz it was so thick. I used fruitopia orange juice so it was pretty sweet. I still had half a can left after using 6oz, so I canned a jar of the sauce for next time (without flour lol) I didn't feel the need to precook the chicken as it would cook in the crockpot. Maybe that's part of the reason it's dry-- it's overlooked. I served it on top of orzo pasta and it was super good and my 4 year old loved it! Thanks!!

ReplyDeleteI agree with "IndianaAnna" WAY too sweet and the orange flavor was too much for me. I'd cut back to maybe 1 T brown sugar and maybe 3oz orange concentrate. Bump up the vinegar and maybe add some soy sauce an garlic. I will say that the texture of the chicken and the sauce was spot on!

this was very good after a few modifications based on other peoples reviews...I added some ginger, garlic and red pepper flakes and cooked the chicken with corn starch instead of flour. It cooked VERY fast and almost burnt in the crock pot. I ended up adding a 1/2 can of chicken broth to it to make it saucier because it had got too thick...it came out GREAT! It got rave reviews....it had a little kick to it from the red pepper flakes, but we all liked it. the added chicken broth definitely was needed. Next time I will probably start with some in it from the beginning. It ended up having a nice balance of sweet and spicy. I will make it again. Thank you for the recipe and for others comments on how to improve it.

ReplyDeleteI noticed alot of people remarked that they only used half a can of OJ concentrate to avoid soupy texture or a sauce that is too citrusy, but if you look at the directions in the recipe, it only calls for 6 oz. of concentrate anyway. That is half a can. Lol. I'm looking forward to trying this tonight!

ReplyDeleteI saw this on pinterest and made it last night. I was a little worried because of all the bad reviews, but I liked it! True, it's orange-y, but I like orange-y. The biggest downfall is that the chicken is a bit dry, but it's not THAT dry and it's still good. As per reviewers suggested, I added a dash of ginger powder and garlic powder. I wish it made more sauce, sauce that I could use to flavor the accompanying rice. Otherwise I'd definitely make it again!
ReplyDeleteI made this tonight and I did edit it for spice adding 1T Srirachia (omitting 1T ketchup), 1t garlic powder, 2t ground ginger. I think those with OJ soup are maybe adding too much OJ?? You can't just dump a whole container in. Also, it's crockpot chicken, it's not going to be moist unless you are there to check it all the time. Who is at home when the crock pot is cooking? Isn't that the point?

But, I followed the reviews and did the corn starch instead of flour (don't think it made any difference), used 2 cups of actual orange juice, 3T Ketchup, 1T soy sauce, 2T brown sugar for the sauce. Everything else I did the same and it was a HIT! No leftovers! :))
ReplyDeleteJust made this today and went with what some other people said to tweak it. I did the sauce as instructed minus the salt. Added in some soy sauce, garlic powder, ginger powder, chicken broth, and sesame oil. It's really, really good and both children liked it, which is a miracle because that NEVER happens. I was going to cook on low for 5 hours like it says but checked it at 3 hours and it was ready and cooked to perfection, so for those who said this was dry, I believe you. Just don't cook as long. This stuff's kind of addictive to be quite honest. We've been snacking on it since the kids got in the door from school - couldn't even wait till dinner to eat it! :)

ReplyDeleteI was making this for the first time when I had guests coming in from out of town. After I started reading the reviews, though, I went into panic mode!! So to keep it from being too citrus-y, I added soy sauce (approx 2-3 tbsp), fish oil (approx 1 tsp), garlic (pretty hefty sprinkle), ginger seasoning (urban accents ginger szechwan blend - pretty hefty sprinkle). Then when I realized it was still pretty soupy, I added about a tablespoon of corn starch mixed with about 2 tablespoons of water. I served it over rice and stir fry veggies and everyone LOVED IT! Thanks for all the helpful tips! The base of this recipe is good, just needed a little help, that's all! :o)
ReplyDeleteI made this tonight and it was great. I made a few adjustments, however. I added the entire 12 ounce can of OJ concentrate, upped the pepper a little more and added some cayenne pepper, paprika and dried onion to the OJ sauce (about a tsp. each). I also cut up a large red pepper and threw it in the crock pot as well. If I make this again, which I will because I loved it, I would also cut up a sweet potato to the mix as well. Really good!!

ReplyDeleteHey, I am 19 and this summer I have been trying to learn to cook. I've been getting decent but I made this recipe and it was a total failure. I'm not suggesting at all there was anything wrong with the recipe! Since I am learning I would like to know where I went wrong. I mixed all the things in correct proportions, cut up chicken cutlets (maybe too thin?) covered them with flour and cooked them in vegetable oil (maybe too much? Maybe olive oil was crucial?) and put it all in a crock pot on low for 5 hours. The sauce was sickly sweet and the chicken tasted like bread. What could have happened?!

Grace, lots of people think it was too sweet as well so some people have suggested using orange juice instead of the concentrate. They've also mentioned that the cook time was also too long and dried out the chicken, so you'd need to check on it an hour or two earlier. And when cutting the chicken, make sure you don't cut them smaller than 1 in cubes or they'll dry out. Also, make sure to just brown them in the oil. They don't have to be fully cooked in the pan. They'll finish cooking in the crock pot.

Which I think is good, because I feel like there was more chicken used. And this way it really does soak in the sauce. I will st a reply later to let you know how it turned out!

ReplyDeleteFirst off, the chicken was pretty bland. I think if I had seasoned the chicken pieces with a little salt and let it sit for about 10 mins prior to dipping it in the flour it would have made a big difference. Or maybe add a little S&P to the flour.
Second, I'd take the advice of another reviewer and use orange juice instead of OJ concentrate to cut down on the strong citrus flavor.
I would also add a clove of pressed garlic and a little honey to make it taste more like the orange chicken I've had at restaurants. And I did add a 1/2 TBS soy sauce when I made it this time.
It was a tad thinner then I'd like it to be, but not too bad. I would probably help to take the top up for the final hour-30 mins of cooking.
All in all it still wasn't terrible the way it turned out even without this additions.
I just put this in the crock pot for dinner tonight with some of the suggested modifications. Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteI made this but added a lot of soy sauce, 1/2 cup of honey, worsteshire sauce, and minced garlic. Also fried the chicken in Hooters breading (bought it at Walmart) and it came out amazing!
ReplyDeleteI'm making this for dinner tonight but I'm concerned that there won't be enough sauce with the cooking time of 5-6 hours on low. Can I add the rest of the OJ concentrate or should I just add some OJ? I already added garlic. ginger, and soy.

Made it exactly according to the recipe and did not enjoy the result...too orange-y and strange tasting--nothing at all like orange chicken you'd order at a restaurant. ReplyDeleteI ask my children to select a new recipe each week to sample, because it helps with their math and reading and keeps me out of a menu rut. They selected this orange chicken recipe so I purchased the ingredients I thought we needed on the way home. To say I was freaked out by the reviews would be an understatement. So, I'll share what I did and let you know how its going thus far.
ReplyDeleteI used half a can of frozen OJ which in a more-liquid-than-slush-form was a full cup. I cut the brown sugar from 4 to 2 Tbs, and the ketchup from 3 to 2 Tbs. My children told me we had balsamic vinegar, but we really had balsamic dressing (Wishbone Salad Spritzer: Balsamic Breeze) I rolled with it and added 1 Tbs to the mix. After tasting how orangey the marinade was I decided to add: 1/2 a tsp of garlic from a jar, 1 tsp of Sriracha, 1 tsp soy and a few shakes of ginger (I was surprised to find with my baking supplies). After these additions it tasted more like Asian sauce with a strong orange flavor. For the chicken I am using Gold Kist Farms:Fridge to Freezer pack from Cost Co. As another reviewer instructed I used corn starch to bread the chicken but made the mistake of putting the heat on medium with the first batch. For the second batch I used high heat, which firmed and browned the edges just right :-)(approx 45 seconds to a minute on each side). While I browned the chicken I let the sauce heat up in my large crock pot. I laid the chicken in it's sauce for 10 mins then turned it over. Its been cooking on high for 20 minutes, I just sampled a piece and think its pretty good. It does have a bit of an orange bite but I think my kids will love it! I plan to let it cook for another 10 minutes or so and it should be perfect. As far as the soupiness others experienced I didn't have that problem. The sauce is bubbling up nice and thick, especially around the edges. Next time I will think to spray a little Pam around the edges. I hope you all experience the same success I did tonight when you try this recipe!
PS- LISA, thanks for posting I don't know how to make anything Asian and this chicken turned out really well. I'm not as crazy about orange chicken as my kids are so I think the minor adjustments made it work for everyone.

I have tried many copy cat recipes, many from famous chefs off the internet, and this is the best. for Orange Chicken. Making it right now in the oven as I am a single person and was not enough for my huge crockpot to deal with, Took half an hour at 325. I also had no orange juice, but had some orange punch frozen. I used that. !!!! When you want the taste of orange chicken in your mouth, you use whatever you have to make it a reality. I added soy sauce, ginger and garlic to mine..... Tastes perfect. DeleteI just made this recipe this morning. I realized that when I got to work that this recipe only calls for it to be on low for 6 hours. I left mine on the low for 10 hour setting. Does anyone now if this meal will be destroyed by the time I get home in 8 hours? Did anyone else leave it for this long? I am really just hoping nothing catches on fire at this point :)
ReplyDeleteI make this using one cup of orange juice instead of the concentrate. I also use boneless skinless chicken thighs rather than breasts, which are much too dry for my liking. I don't think this is a good recipe for a slow cooker, the small chicken pieces will dry out when cooked for several hours. I use a frying pan, and it's much faster, and the sauce gets nice and thick. You only cook it until the sauce is as thick as you want it. Add chopped red, yellow, or orange peppers, water chestnuts, or pea pods (or broccoli florets) and serve over rice for a great meal.

ReplyDeleteAs another poster mentioned, I always use cornstarch instead of flour when making Asian chicken recipes. I'm sensitive to gluten, and it's a lot easier on my stomach than flour. Using gluten free soy sauce makes it even better. Both the hubby and I agree that it comes out crisper.
ReplyDeleteThis is a nice recipe but I found it a bit bland. I reduced the 6oz orange juice to 4oz. I added 1 can of pineapple chunks (it has approximately 2 oz of juice which makes up for the other 2 oz liquid in the orange juice). I added 2 tbsp. of honey instead of the brown sugar. I also added a splash of teriyaki sauce or low sodium soya sauce. All other ingredients were the same as called for in the recipe. In my opinion, these additions made for a lovely sweet and sour tasting chicken dish.

I have try at home and Holy Smokes this is so good! I followed some of the tips and added 1 tsp minced garlic, dash of ginger, 1/2 tsp sesame oil and some chili garlic paste and cooked for only 2 hrs on low. Good. Thanks so much!!!
